Marjainez

Maria Ines Gul, (or better known as Marjainez in the art fraternity) is an illustration queen. Her work is minimal, clean, classy, modern, cute and simple all rolled into one. And that handwriting of hers needs to become a font I say. A font!

Bonnard

Macaroons always get the prettiest packaging designs. These are from Mexico based studio Anagrama. Sampling the brush strokes of French postimpressionist Pierre Bonnard, the line was designed for a tea and confectionary shop. The overall look is both effortless and classy. Those pastel colour combinations are lovely too.

Molly Jacques

Happy new year everyone! I just want to say thank you all so much for all your kind words and support over the past year. It’s been really fulfilling looking for amazing artists and designs to feature. :)

So here’s the first post of 2013!

Maybe this year I will try to master the art of calligraphy. It’s such a beautiful art form. Molly Jacques‘ work is oh so lovely. I would so frame the one that says soup!

BMD Design

Based in France, BMD Design cranks out the best looking hand lettering out there. It’s urban and grungy but classy all the same. Take a look at what I mean.

The Event Of A Thread

I love swings. I had one as a child outside both our old houses. I long for the day I can have one in a home of my own. For those of you in New York, swing away indoors at this uber fun installation. You have visual artist Ann Hamilton to thank. She’s the brains behind the multimedia installation titled The Event Of A Thread. There are 42 swings hung from a high ceiling just waited to be used. (Come to think of it if they were just displayed on their own they would already be beautiful). But how amazing is it that you can actually use the swings and relive childhood memories!

I had to include this beautifully written excerpt from Ann’s site:

“I can remember the feeling of swinging—how hard we would work for those split seconds, flung at furthest extension, just before the inevitable downward and backward pull, when we felt momentarily free of gravity, a little hiccup of suspension when our hands loosened on the chain and our torsos raised off the seat. We were sailing, so inside the motion—time stopped—and then suddenly rushed again toward us. We would line up on the playground and try to touch the sky, alone together.”

The Event Of A Thread is currently on display at Park Avenue Armory until January 6, 2013.

Bracket

I need to get my hands on all 8 volumes of Bracket – a sleek publication that features ideas, sketches and processes. The collection contains volumes on craft, hunger, ethics, failure and spirit to name a few. I love the sexy minimal image on the outside and the scatterbrain sketches covering the inner pages.

Holiday/Apocalypse Survival Kit

I love me a good survival kit. These kits designed by Trigger are in such stark contrast to each other that both would be great to hand out to friends for Christmas.

Ten Principles of Good Design by Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams once asked himself if his design was good. A simple but insightful question. Soon afterward he came up with a sort of checklist of commandments that is still of use today.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks the new WordPress makes it really difficult to post in such a tiny box. Also uploading photos was a lot easier when we could dump all the photos in at once.
